HIV/AIDS

The José Gutiérrez Archives reflects the history of Latino HIV/AIDS activism. By the late 1980s, a small group of organizations, community leaders, and LGBTQ activists were organizing in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in Washington, DC’s Latino community. In the nation’s capital, HIV/AIDS affected the LGBTQ Latino community disproportionately. By the 1990s, numerous grassroots organizations began providing for the local community’s needs: education, medical care, mental health, food, and shelter.

Over time, organizations such as La Clínica del Pueblo, Salud Inc, Whitman-Walker Health, ENLACE, GELAAM, NMAC, NAPWA, LLEGO, the DC Government, Washington Free Clinic, Grupo Platiquemos, Centro Juvenil Empodérate, Casa Ruby, Casa Angie, Latin American Youth Center, NOVA Salud Inc, Proyecto Impacto, and other agencies created bilingual prevention campaigns and delivered a wide range of HIV/AIDS services.

Latino queer culture was embedded in all these efforts. An essential part of the history of HIV/AIDS activism are fundraisers and other forms of philanthropic activism such as drag shows and pageants, poetry readings, health fairs, parties, protests, and parades.
