Organizations & Events

The José Gutiérrez Archives documents the understudied story of the formation of local and national Latino LGBTQ organizations in Washington, DC. In 1987, ENLACE was the first local group that organized to advocate for the Latino LGBTQ community. As a result of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which happened later that year, ENLACE’s members organized the National Latina/o Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Organization (LLEGÓ).

In the 1990s, LLEGÓ was followed by several formal and informal LGBTQ organizations including Gente Latina de Ambiente (GELAAM), Platiquemos, Acuarela, Latinos en Acción, Centro Empodérate of LCDP, The Latino GLBT History Project, and Unid@s National Latina/o LGBT Human Rights Organization.

By the 2000s, this legacy of LGBTQ community organizing led to organizations such as Casa Angie, Casa Ruby, Center Latinx of the DC Center, TransLatina Coalition (DC), Latinx Institute of Creating Change National LGBTQ Task Force, Dicción Queer, Gran Varones, Unidos MCC, Latino Leather, LULAC Lambda, Centro Internacional para el Desarrollo Integral Arcoiris Inc., DCHomo and the José Gutierrez Archives.

While many of these organizations have ceased to exist, their history of advocacy around issues such as healthcare, housing, education, and immigration rights, is a testimony to the ways LGBTQ Latinas/os/xs have enriched U.S. democracy and civic life.
